Rebel Wilson’s age is 35. So why did she say 29?

Rebel Wilson age Pitch Perfect

Rebel Wilson, our very much adored Australian-comedy-export has been caught in a bit of drama this week. The press are calling her a liar. That’s pretty hardcore stuff and it’s public too. She’s told people and the press she’s 29 when she’s actually 35. So what’s the fuss and why does Rebel Wilson feel the need to say she’s 29.

First up the media is having a field day, it generates hype and scandal. It’s like they’ve discovered the holy grail when in fact they’ve found 2 digits. These digits, is what Rebel Wilson, the media, you and I are all interested in. Why is so much importance and interest around Rebel Wilson’s age so damn interesting?

Age Scale

You see, in the background, what no one wants to say or hear, people judge people’s potential and suitability based on an age scale. If you’re too old you might not get the role, which is why Rebel Wilson went for an under 30 number. Right on cusp of maturity yet still youthful. If you’re too young, you also won’t get the role. The age scale is the easiest and dumbest scale to qualify a person’s ability, suitability or worth. Now, before I or you take the high road and say that people shouldn’t do that (and they shouldn’t) like me you’ve probably done it at least once in your life. If you’re thinking you have never, then you’re lying to yourself. What about that guy who was too old for you or the guy that was too young for your friend to be dating. As a society, we’re consumed by the number. For some people, it makes them feel great for other’s it makes them feel worthless depending how they perceive their age and others.

Take a deep breath

The best news is this: you are not a number. I am not a number. Rebel Wilson is not a number. It’s actually bizarre to relate to people as a number or at the very least a very limiting perspective. Even though Rebel Wilson lied about her age she’s proven that it is possible to have what you want, to realise your dreams regardless of your age. She stars in the Pitch Perfect 2, the number 1 hit movie in the US right now.

Thank you so much Pitches!!

Inadvertently she’s also proven that we cannot escape the perception people have about one’s age. We cannot escape societies perception of each other’s age. What a conundrum!! Everyone has a different perception around each age in the scale and while for most of us it isn’t a daily challenge that we have to overcome, on the other hand, actors, singers etc. are heavily judged on their age. Poor bastards… but the famous celebrities are paid lots of money and live a very privileged high life, so I’m not feeling sorry for them. I’ll save my compassion for the hungry.

She’s also been busted for other stories, like living in the ghetto etc. I think people need to remember she’s a comedian and actress. That’s what she loves to do. Good on you Rebel, we know you’re not a number and we love ice cream too!
