Welcome to a New Skin Health Series where you will be taken on a journey to discover how to get the best from the skin you’re in!
Now, before you close this page because you think this topic doesn’t apply to you, I want you to ask yourself – Have I ever used soap on my body? Have I ever been sunburnt? Have I ever used a moisturiser? Have I ever had semen on my body? If you answered yes to at least one of these, then you’re going to want to hang around!
Let’s start by introducing you to the basics of Skin Anatomy.
Imagine a suit that is waterproof, stretchable, washable, permanent-press, automatically repairs small tears and burns, and can even repair larger tears over a period of time. Doesn’t this sound like an awesome suit? Well, your skin is exactly that – an awesome suit covering your whole body.
The surface layer of your skin, the bit you can see with your eyes, is called the Epidermis. It’s made up of 5 layers (Basal, Spinosum, Granulosum, Lucidum, & Corneum) and these layers play a major role in how your skin looks and feels. These layers can be affected by environment hazards, genetics, nutrition, cosmetic treatments and skin care products that you put on your skin.
Over the course of this series, I will aim to cover a range of topics that will help you to understand more about how skin works and show you ways to improve the health of your skin.
It’s important to remember that your skin is the largest, and most abused, organ on your body. Your skin is not just there to show off your beautiful complexion or to keep your insides from spilling out, it’s there to keep you protected for a lifetime. So always try to remember to treat your skin with respect!
Stay tuned for the first topic in this series on “Body Exfoliation”, where I discuss how it benefits your skin and methods to use, plus I answer questions such as, “Is it good to use a Loofah straight after the gym?”
